An SEGD Viewer is a specialized geophysical software tool used to open, inspect, and quality-control SEG-D field data. SEG-D is a complex format established by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). It is primarily used to record raw, multi-channel seismic data directly from field sensor units during geophysical surveys.
Because SEG-D files store massive byte streams containing multiplexed/demultiplexed data, extensive metadata headers, and unique channel set attributes, they cannot be opened by standard file applications. A viewer renders this raw structural information into readable waveforms and visual charts. 1. Opening and Browsing Files
Most lightweight programs—such as Seismatters SEGD Viewer or SegDSee—operate on a straightforward data path:
Directory Loading: Use File → Open Directory to load a folder holding field data.
Auto-Detection: The software automatically scans the file encapsulation to detect the SEG-D revision structure (e.g., Rev 1, 2.1, or 3.0).
Shot Navigation: Software usually provides a tree sidebar or forward/backward arrow keys to scroll through individual field shots sequentially.
